Real Food Friday Feast - Banana Ice Cream

I have discovered the most amazing thing and I don't know why it took SO LONG!! I'm not an ice cream fan. I know... I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like ice cream;) It may have something to do with the fact that I am lactose intolerant but I also just don't like the taste. It all tastes artificial to me. However, I can't deny how nice and cooling it can be, especially after a 30km mountain bike ride! Well, I discovered this, very simple, recipe and I decided to try it and I've discovered that I actually AM an ice cream fan, as long as it tastes like this!!

Ice creams have changed a lot since the old fashioned days of ice cream parlours. In fact they are now so full of toxic ingredients that you might as well just eat a bowl of chemicals and give cancer full permission to take up residence! The main ingredients in ice cream are water and cream. On their own, there is nothing wrong with them. The problem is all the additives that they put INTO the ice cream to sweeten it, colour it, make it consistently smooth and give it a long shelf life. Let's face it, you, the consumer, are going to prefer an ice cream that is smooth and that doesn't separate. So you have created the demand and the manufacturers are  MORE than happy to oblige!

Here's why you should avoid conventional ice cream:

Does that sound like something you want to be eating?
  • As I said, the cream and water being whisked together isn't a bad process BUT, in order for it to work as ice cream, ice-cream makers need to use an emulsifier to keep its structure. Back in the good old days, when people used real food, egg yolks were used, but now, ice-cream manufacturers use toxic substances such as Polysorbate 80. This really nasty substance negatively affects the immune system and causes severe anaphylactic shock which can kill. In a study to test its effects on humans it was found to be the reason for the anaphylactoid reaction in patients. Unbelievably, the study included a pregnant woman who suffered anaphylactic shock after being given a IV drip of multi-vitamins containing polysorbate 80! Aside from this, there have been studies in food and chemical toxicology which showed that Polysorbate 80 causes infertility. Baby female rats were injected with polysorbate 80 at days 4-7 after birth. It accelerated the maturing of the rats and caused changes to the womb lining, hormonal changes, ovary deformities and degenerative follicles.
  • Mono-diglycerides (most of you have heard of transfats and hydrogenated oils?) are still the most used emulsifiers in food production. They are called mono-digylcerides because they are made from oils that have a high mono-saturated fat content but they are actually hidden transfats that are combined with an alcohol (in this case glycerol) to form an emulsifying agent. Mono-diglycerides are not nutritious in anyway. In fact, they're the complete opposite of nutritious! They're used to improve volume, structure and develop the right meltdown characteristics for ice cream and it makes no difference if there's a few grams or 100 grams, just having hydrogenated oils in any food product is frighteningly bad for your health. They have SO MANY adverse effects. It's best to avoid ANY food products that use them.
  • Potassium sorbate is probably the most widely used food preservative. You'd struggle to find an ice cream without it. The food industry and their scientists will parrot endless myths that potassium sorbate isn't a health threat. The scary thing is nothing could be further from the truth. Food and chemical toxicology reports have proven that potassium sorbate is a carcinogen. It promotes mutation in the cells of mammals and it has systemic and toxic effects on non-reproductive organs in animals. Scientists say that no long term studies have been initiated on animals or humans, so there isn't enough evidence to guess about what could happen after years of ingesting it. Based on the short-term studies, is it really worth taking the risk though?
  • Sodium benzoate is another ingredient you want to avoid. It can change into lethal carcinogenic poison when its combined with ascorbic acid. According to a study, sodium benzoate causes damage to an important area of DNA in the “power station” of cells known as the mitochondria. Sodium benzoate totally inactivates that "power station". This, and ALL food preservatives shouldn't be ingested in ANY quantity. Sodium benzoate is actually banned from all foods and drinks for children under three. How on earth do you even regulate that and what does that tell you?!
  • Artificial colours and flavours, especially when mixed with sodium benzoate, increase levels of hyperactivity in children. They also bring on asthma attacks and are linked to thyroid tumours. Unfortunately, artificial colours and flavours are very prevalent in ice cream products and these are marketed directly marketed to children. EVERY SINGLE artificial colour in the food industry has some kind of detrimental health effect which include neurotoxicity, organ, developmental, and reproductive toxicity and cancer.
So, now you're thinking you need another ice cream option, right? ;)

BUT... before I get into how to make banana ice cream, let's just have a look at WHY you'd even want to make it. Bananas have gotten a bad rap, I think. It's true that they're high in sugar, especially if they're really ripe, but if you're going to cut something out of your diet because it's high in sugar, perhaps consider something processed, like real ice cream or bread or pasta, all of which are going to affect your waistline FAR more. Bananas should be at the bottom of the list of foods you don't eat and here's why:
  • Bananas have high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin. Serotonin is the "happy mood" brain neurotransmitter which means bananas are great at combating depression.
  • Added to the previous point, bananas will also improve your mood and reduce PMS symptoms
which regulates blood sugar and produces stress-relieving relaxation
  • Bananas prevent calcium loss during urination, and build strong bones
  • Protect against muscle cramps during workouts and night time leg cramps by eating a banana
  • Bananas have high levels of vitamin B6 which can do many things such as reduce swelling, protect you from getting Type 2 Diabetes, promote loss of body fat, strengthen the nervous system, and help with the production of white blood cells
  • Bananas are full of iron which means they strengthen your blood and help with anaemia
  • Bananas are high in potassium and low in salt. One of the FEW things I'm in agreement with the FDA about is that they say bananas are able to lower blood pressure, and protect against heart attack and stroke
  • Bananas are rich in pectin which means they aid digestion. Toxins and heavy metals like mercury and aluminium attach to pectin and they are removed from your body
  • Bananas act as a probiotic. They promote the growth of good bacteria in the bowel. They also produce digestive enzymes which help you absorb nutrients
  • Bananas are FULL of soluble fibre. A banana a day will help to keep things running smoothly;)
  • In contrast to that, if things are running TOO smoothly, bananas help to soothe your digestive tract. They'll actually help restore electrolytes your body has lost if you've had diarrhea
  • Put down the gaviscon. Bananas are a natural antacid. They'll give you relief from acid reflux and heartburn
  • If you have stomach ulcers, bananas are actually the only raw fruit that you can eat that won't cause you pain. They actually coat the lining of the stomach and protect it from corrosive acids
  • Eating bananas helps prevent kidney cancer and protects the eyes from degenerating
  • Bananas make you smarter! They also make you more alert so it's a good idea to eat a banana before an exam
  • You've heard about free radicals from me many times. Well, bananas are high in antioxidants, the things that fight those free radicals. They protect you from chronic diseases
  • If you suffer with morning sickness, eating a banana can help reduce the nausea
  • Eating a banana can actually lower your body temperature and cool you if you have a high fever or if it's just a really hot day
  • If you're trying to quit smoking, bananas contain high levels of the B-vitamins as well as potassium and magnesium and all of these actually speed up your recovery from the horrible effects of withdrawal
  • Externally, if you rub an insect bite, or even hives, with the inside of the banana peel it will relieve the itching and irritation
  • You can actually remove a wart by placing the inside of a piece of banana peel against  the wart and taping it in place. You'll need to put it on for quite a few days though!
Bet you didn't know even HALF of those;) So, now that you know why you should eat them, here's a fantastic way to eat them, especially on days like today when the temperature is sitting at 30°.

Banana Ice Cream

6 large bananas
A food processor
That's it! That's literally all you need;)

Method
  • Peel the skin off the bananas
  • Chop them up into bite size pieces (this is optional but it will make things easier later)
  • Place them in a container and put it in the freezer
  • Leave them until they are frozen
  • Remove from the freezer and leave out for about half an hour so that they are slightly soft on the outside (this is just so that you don't totally destroy your food processor blades!)
  • Place all the pieces in your food processor and turn it on
  • Keep it going until the chunks are all gone and you are left with, what looks like ice cream!
  • Enjoy!

I promise you that it doesn't only LOOK like ice cream. The texture is exactly the same as ice cream too and it actually tastes like ice cream, only, better! I can tell you that it totally passed the GLM test. She is a great lover of ice cream and I hate that she eats it, knowing all that goes into it. So I am so happy to have found a replacement that she likes:)

You can make your ice cream more interesting by adding a tablespoon of raw cocoa powder to give you chocolate ice cream. In fact, why not add REAL grated dark chocolate?! Woolies has a lovely dark, organic chocolate. You can also add vanilla extract to get vanilla ice cream. I tried adding honey which was very sweet but also delicious. My mom suggested coconut which is great idea I think! I am going to try that next. The sky is the limit as long as you are adding real, natural products. This weekend definitely looks like the perfect weather to give this a try!
